Weight loss treatment options: An Overview
Weight loss treatments primarily includes sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, gastric balloon, and gastric banding, along with gastroplasty. The goal of these surgeries is significant and rapid weight loss, thereby reducing excessive body weight. Overweight is often determined by BMI (Body Mass Index), categorizing weight gain as overweight, obesity, and morbid obesity. Being overweight poses a real and significant health risk, shortening life expectancy. Patients generally opt for bariatric surgery when traditional weight loss methods, such as dieting, have been ineffective.
These procedures work by reducing the levels of ghrelin, the hunger hormone. Lowering hunger levels leads to reduced food intake. This adjustment in daily calorie intake versus calories burned results in immediate weight loss.
How Much Weight Can you lose?
Gastric Botox
Gastric Botox involves an average weight loss of 4 to 8 kg over 6 months. This temporary method requires changes in eating behavior for lasting success.
Elipse Gastric Balloon
With the Elipse Gastric Balloon, patients typically lose an average of 10 to 15 kg over 4 months. It is a non-surgical solution that requires strict nutritional follow-up.
6 or 12 Month Gastric Balloon
These balloons enable an average weight loss of 15 to 30 kg. They are an intermediate option before considering more invasive surgeries.
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve Gastrectomy offers significant weight loss, with an average reduction of 30 to 60% of excess body weight over 2 years. This surgery is recommended for severe obesity.
What treatments should you choose ?
Gastric Botox and Elipse Balloon: These are suitable for anyone seeking minor weight loss assistance, such as 4 to 8 kg with Botox and 5 to 10 kg with the Elipse Balloon, as well as for overweight patients.
6 or 12 Month Gastric Balloon: These are ideal for patients with moderate to significant overweight, offering more substantial support in weight management.
Surgical Interventions (Sleeve, Bypass): These are primarily for patients with obesity (BMI over 30). However, the decision for surgery is made after thorough evaluation with the surgeon, without strict BMI criteria. The overall health of the patient is considered, with comorbidities like diabetes or hypertension possibly necessitating surgical intervention.
Bariatric surgery definitions
Intended for patients suffering from overweight and obesity (BMI > 30), bariatric surgery is a reliable technique for reducing the daily intake of food. The objective being a loss of excess weight in less than 2 years.
Gastric balloon
The balloon is placed in the stomach and the balloon takes up space in the stomach, effectively reducing the space left for food. By occupying ¾ of the space with the balloon, the level of ghrelin increases as soon as the little food that the patient ingests occupies the remaining quarter of the stomach. The amount of feed is drastically reduced. The weight loss is lasting and forces the patient to modify his eating habits. With a gastric balloon, the patient can generally lose between 10 and 20 kilos depending on his size, sometimes more. The balloon must be removed after a certain period of time, the procedure is also outpatient and quick (about 30 minutes).
Gastric botox
The principle of botox gastric is to inject botulinum toxin into the walls of the stomach in order to fix the walls and paralyze the elasticity of the stomach and thus prevent it from enlarging. Thus the amount of food ingestible by the patient is reduced because the stomach loses its elasticity. The effect of gastric botox disappears after a few months and the botulinum toxin is absorbed and evacuated by the body. With gastric botox the patient can generally lose between 5 and 15 kilos depending on his size , sometimes more.
The sleeve surgery
The sleeve gastrectomy procedure involves removing a large part of the stomach to form a tube. The amount of food and the rate of absorption are drastically and permanently reduced. The weight loss is long-lasting and significant and obliges the patient to modify his eating behavior. With a gastric sleeve, the patient can generally lose between 15 and 40 kilos depending on their size, sometimes more.
The Bypass
As the Sleeve the quantity as well as the speed of absorption is radically changed, the weight loss is important and radical. The intervention of the gastric bypass consists in reducing the volume of the stomach and modifying the food circuit. Food no longer passes through the stomach and the upper part of the digestive tract, it goes directly into the middle part of the small intestine. With a gastric bypass the patient can generally lose between 20 and 50 kilos according to its size, sometimes more.
Gastric banding
The gastric band, once a popular choice, is now considered outdated. Though it requires general anesthesia similar to that for a sleeve gastrectomy, it does not provide comparable weight loss effectiveness. Additionally, it poses risks such as band slippage, which can damage the stomach and complicate any future surgeries. The maintenance of the band requires regular adjustments by a nurse. The benefits once associated with the gastric band have now been eclipsed by the gastric balloon, offering increased safety and efficacy.

Key steps of Sleeve, Bypass gastric Balloon
ANESTHESIA
The placement of a gastric band, Sleeve or Bypass is performed under general anesthesia, during which the patient sleeps completely.
Gastric balloon placement is performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The patient is not hospitalized.
INTERVENTION
Gastric balloon placement involves placing a balloon contained in a pill into the stomach while swallowing it. The balloon is then inflated with saline. Once the ball is in place, an X-ray is taken to check the placement of the ball. The gastric balloon in Turkey generally requires 3 to 4 days on site maximum, but can even be performed in less (2 nights minimum).
The psurgeries procedures can be performed using the technique of colonoscopy or laparoscopy surgery. The choice of technique is discussed with the surgeon on site according to the particularities of the patient. In the case of the sleeve and the bypass, a tube is introduced into the stomach during the intervention and makes it possible to reduce the size of the stomach. stomach for the sleeve and even to remove it in some cases for the bypass. The sleeve and the bypass are irreversible operations. These interventions are recommended for patients who are significantly overweight and unable to reduce it following several weight loss attempts.
The sleeve in Turkey or the bypass generally requires 1 week on site and some of our packages include all the services on site and for your trip with the exception of the return flight.
The placement of a gastric band requires the creation of a small incision (less than 1.25 cm) near the navel. A camera is inserted into the abdomen to view images of the stomach on a screen. A small circular tunnel is then created to introduce the gastric band and lock it around the stomach. This operation is recommended for adults aged 18 to 55 who have consecutively undergone several weight loss attempts and who want a reversible procedure.
OPERATION DURATION/ CLINIC STAY
The procedure lasts an average of 1 hour. A hospitalization of at least 2 nights is not necessary in all cases with general anesthesia. The exact hospitalization is to be determined with the doctor.
No hospitalization with gastric balloon or gastric botox.
The achievements of bariatric surgery?
The objective is of course an overall improvement in health, and even a better life expectancy. Severe obesity is a serious factor of poor health in the long term which shortens the life expectancy of patients and causes a whole series of serious pathologies which will reduce the comfort of life (diabetes, cardiovascular problems, etc.).
By physically reducing the capacity to intake food, bariatric treatments will drastically change the body's response to food consumption. Patients are no longer hungry and weight loss occurs over the months and years following the procedure. The risks of regaining weight are low in the long term.

Follow up
The aftermath is not very painful. Following the intervention, the patient must strictly respect the rules of food hygiene: Never drink during the meal, take the time to chew food well, do not swallow too quickly. Liquid and pasty foods are recommended at the beginning. It is recommended not to exceed 3 meals a day and to avoid snacking. During the first two years after the operation, quarterly follow-up with a gastroenterologist is essential. In the case of the band, the tightening of the band may be possible after 4 to 6 weeks when the patient begins to lose weight. This tightening is done by a radiologist, without anesthesia. If the patient is pregnant, it is sufficient to deflate the ring for the duration of the pregnancy. The resumption of physical activities is done from the first postoperative week.
Are you a potential patient for bariatric treatments ?
Minimally invasive procedures like gastric botox or the Elipse balloon are accessible to everyone, regardless of their condition. These options suit patients seeking modest weight loss assistance (for example, a loss of 4 to 8 kg with Botox and 5 to 10 kg with the Elipse balloon) as well as those who are overweight. The 6-month or 12-month balloons are more suited for individuals with moderate to severe overweight issues. Surgical interventions such as sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass are intended for patients suffering from obesity (BMI above 30). However, the decision to undergo surgery should be made after an informed discussion with the surgeon, and the eligibility criteria are not limited to a specific BMI. The overall health status is taken into consideration. Co-morbidities such as diabetes or hypertension are aggravating factors that may necessitate surgical intervention depending on the patient's health condition.
